Common symptoms of anxiety include: excessive feelings of worry, sleep disturbance, irritability, fatigue, restlessness, and more. While these are common symptoms for anyone dealing with anxiety, anxiety tends to look different for black people, and people of color in general. Anxiety risk factors can typically include history of trauma, family history of anxiety, gender, stress, etc. When you are black or a person of color, risk factors can be expanded to include the aforementioned, as well as racism, certain medical conditions that impact our communities at higher rates, early environment, and more.
Oftentimes people who suffer from anxiety, will also find that they suffer from symptoms of depression, and vice versa. In fact, some studies have shown that 60% of people with anxiety, will also have symptoms of depression. This may be due to their symptoms of either disorder becoming so debilitating, that they constantly find themselves in a state of worry, or they find their level of anxiousness to be depressing.
Therapy can help support those with anxiety, by uncovering the causes and triggers that lead to those excessive feelings of worry. Together, in therapy we will focus on discovering and acknowledging those triggers, and finding ways to view and reframe them as less frightening and intimidating, while developing healthy problem-solving skills when faced with those triggers.
