If you have experienced or are experiencing difficulties with sleeping, finding motivation to engage in activities you once enjoyed, changes in your eating habits, feelings of worthlessness, and feelings of fatigue, then you may be experiencing depression or a depressive episode.
Many people, specifically black people and people of color, are suffering in silence from depression for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons include, lack of access to proper mental health support, negative perception from their community, misdiagnosis from health care providers, and more.
A Safe Space for You in PA and NJ, it is our mission to provide the best care for our clients. Many people do not seek out therapy due to concerns that they will not be understood or represented when speaking about their problems. In fact statistics have shown that 25% of black people are likely to seek out mental health support, in comparison to 40% in regards to their white counterpart. These studies have also shown that this statistical anaylsis has come to be due to the aforementioned reasons. As someone who is part of your community, or a community that looks very similar to yours, I know the importance of having a space that provides safety and security, as you disclose information that may not be easy to discuss.
In session we will focus on the negative self talk, negative thoughts, and triggers that lead to depression, as well as other possible factors such as generational trauma, recent life events, anxiety, and more. We will work on challenging those negative patterns, and extinguishing them by replacing them with healthier behaviors and ways of thinking. It is my belief that the more challenging work comes in applying what is learned in session, outside of the therapeutic space. Oftentimes, clients who solely depend on sessions to transform their thought processes and behavioral patterns, will not see the changes they are aiming for. Therapy is just half of the work, and I will be there to encourage and support you in doing the other half.
