Self-worth is the foundation for your outlook and viewpoint of yourself and the world around you. Self-worth is the confidence you have in yourself, regarding your worth and abilities. Your self-worth impacts your relationship with yourself and others, your emotional health, your decision-making processes, and your overall well-being.
If you are someone who struggles with self-worth issues, you probably find that you are often extremely critical of yourself. You are probably someone who turns your minor mishaps into unforgivable mistakes, and you are also probably someone who views others' negative behaviors towards you as faults of your own. Research has shown that black girls and women are more likely to suffer from lower self-worth and self-esteem, than their white counterparts. This can in turn lead to issues with depression, anxiety, and so much more. Societal beauty standards and pressures have placed almost impossible visions of what women should look like, and how they should behave, and most of these standards do not have black and brown girls and women in mind. Due to trying meet standards that never included us in the first place, black and brown girls oftentimes find themselves working 2-3 times as hard, while receiving only half of the acknowledgement, which can have a detrimental impact on how they view themselves.
At A Safe Space for You in PA and NJ, we work towards challenging those thoughts by uncovering the root of where they originated, and finding ways to reframe them. Having a strong and positive relationship with yourself is the primary factor in how you engage with the world around you. How we speak into ourselves plays a major role in how we feel about ourselves, and how we interact with our surroundings. Though society may tell us to feel one way about ourselves, when we have a strong connection to the core of who we really are, we are more likely to challenge those standards, and ignore what we know is not true, allowing ourselves to be more internally and externally confident in our abilities.
