Relationship problems are not just limited to romantic partnerships; relationships can be related to family, friends, work, etc. Our relationships with others can become strained at various points in our life, and that strain can impact other areas of life if not addressed. Relationship woes can lead to several issues, including but not limited to: depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, self-esteem issues, cardiovascular issues, and high blood pressure.
How we handle the various relationships in our lives, is often determined by our attachment styles, which are developed during our formative years. If we had positive, loving, and self-afirming relationships with our caregivers, then we are more likely to have a secure attachment style. Whereas if we had the opposite relationship with our caregivers (negative, uncertain, unsafe), then we are more likely to have an anxious or even avoidant attachment style.
Effects from the experiences of past or present relationships are not only limited to psychological concerns; they can also lead to concerns within our bodies. If we have experienced relationship trauma, then we may find that when placed in similar or unfamiliar situations, our bodies may freeze or spasm, or provide another signal that lets us know we are not comfortable. On the opposite side, if we feel safe within our relational space, our bodies may feel less tense and at ease.
