Grief and loss can present itself in a multitude of ways, whether it be death, the loss of a job, a relationship, or something else that we hold dear to our lives. When experiencing a loss, grief and mourning often follows, as these are the painful events that typically takes place following a significant loss.
Grief is not a linear experience. Many people feel the pain of loss almost immediately, while others may go into shock or denial, and take quite some time before they ever begin to process their loss. While grief is not linear, there are stepping stones that need to take place, in order to process and move forward in your life. These stepping stones are known as the Four Tasks of Mourning: Accepting the reality of your loss, Processing the pain of grief, Adjusting to a world without the important person/place/thing, and Finding a continuing connection to that important person/place/thing as you continue in life. Grief and loss is never easy, but going through the emotions and exploring how you feel following the tragedy is healthy and important. Grief is a natural part of life, and it is something that we will all experience in multiple forms through the life cycle.
At A Safe Space for You in PA and NJ, we understand and embrace that grief and mourning is not one size fits all, and will be different from one person to the next. The goal is never to forget, but instead to be able to move forward in a healthy manner that will not prevent you from carrying on and moving forward in your life. The objective is to learn to accept what has taken place, and to make peace with your new normal. If we do not properly explore our emotions following a significant loss, we can be left with feelings of anxiety, depression, and so much more.
